A public figure and expert of marine protection and conservation, Mariasole Bianco studied the management of marine protected areas in Australia, and returned to Italy in 2013 to invest her knowledge and skills in the defense of the Mediterranean.
She is the co-founder and president of the association Worldrise, engaged in safeguarding marine ecosystems through awareness projects that aim to reconnect humans and nature, training future generations to safeguard their Mediterranean ecosystem heritage.
She has taught nature conservation at the University of Genoa and since 2012 has participated in the World Commission on Protected Areas for the IUCN, the International Union for the Protection of Nature. In 2019, she was awarded the DonnAmbiente Prize and was selected as moderator for the United Nations “World Oceans Day”. Nominated by Forbes as one of the top 100 most powerful women in Italy, in 2020 she received the award “Trofeo del Mare” (Trophy of the Sea).
She has been a regular guest on the Rai3 program “Kilimangiaro” since 2015, and in 2020 she hosted the program “L’Italia non finisce mai” (Italy never ends) on Rai1. In June of that same year, she published her first book, Pianeta Oceano [Planet Ocean], published by Rizzoli, an account of the wonders of ocean environments, the problems that afflict them and the solutions that would allow us to protect them. The cartoon “Acquateam-missione mare” (Acquateam: Water Mission), in which she is the protagonist, was released in 2021 and is a finalist for numerous international awards.
