Physician and PhD in Neurophysiology, he researches hibernation and the technologies to simulate it.
Born in Parma in 1973, Matteo Cerri is a surgeon, a PhD in Neurophysiology, and associate professor of Physiology at the Department of Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences at University of Bologna. He is associated with the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), affiliated with the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), member of the Topical Team Hibernation of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Road Map Table of Integrative Physiology of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and on the national board of the Italian Society of Neuroethics. He teaches Human Physiology at the School of Medicine and is a tutor and member of the Scientific Council for the Collegio Superiore of the University of Bologna.
Cerri’s research takes part in the field of integrative physiology and the neuroscience of hibernation. His scientific activity has been reported in international media such as The Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, NBC, MSNBC, The Daily Beast, Cosmos, Vice, Quartz, and BBC, and national media such as Corriere della Sera, Repubblica, La Stampa, il Messaggero, Avvenire, Le Scienze, Wired, Mente e Cervello, Focus and others. He has participated in documentaries, television and radio programs such as “How Science Fiction’s Deep Sleep Could Become Reality” (Bloomberg), “TED Radio hour” (NPR), “Quark+” (RaiPlay), “Stories of Science” (RAI scuola), “Uno Mattina” (Rai 1), “Who’s afraid of the dark?” (Italia 1), “Radio 3 Scienza” (Radio 3), “Il boss del weekend” (Radio DJ), “Moebius” (Radio24) and “Cactus, just a little water” (Radio Capital), and others.
An author of numerous international publications, he writes for regularly Cosmo and Mind magazines. In 2018, he published A mente fredda – L’hibernazione: dal mondo animale all’esplorazione spaziale (Cold Brain: Hibernation from the Animal World to Space Exploration) with Zanichelli. He published The Cold Mind Curewith Einaudi in 2019. Since 2018, he has run the popular science podcast “Elevator of Thought.”
