Ezio Mauro’s collaboration with Elastica returns with the production of The Year of Fascism. 1922: the story of the March on Rome, a stage lecture developed from the book of the same name published at the centenary of the historic event on Oct. 28, 1922, which led Vittorio Emanuele III to hand over the formation of the new government to Mussolini.
In a spellbinding stage reading, Ezio Mauro takes audiences on a journey back to 1922, the year that definitively split two eras. In the aftermath of World War I, facing the declining power of the monarchy, the violent and new Fascist movement is quickly expanding in Italy. Is it already a power? What does it want, how will it grow, where is it aiming?
“The Fascists popped up a few minutes before two o’clock, protected by the bang of firecrackers in the streets and courtyards, as dancing resumed after the toast. The soft notes and innocent verses of Abat-jour could be heard inside houses, but a gunshot in the street stopped the music. ‘Open up, or you’ll regret it.’ The first night of January ended with a hundred and fifty-one shells on the ground, and started Italy’s 1922, the year of Fascism.”
