Marina Calculli

Scholar of Middle East politics and international relations. She has lived and conducted research in Lebanon, Syria and Egypt, and lectured at various universities in Europe, the US and the Middle East.

She specializes in political violence, terrorism and counterterrorism, and the role of irregular armed groups, with a focus on Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen. She is currently a Lecturer in Middle East Politics and International Relations at Leiden University. Before joining Leiden, she has held research and teaching positions at the George Washington University, University of Oxford, the American University of Beirut (AUB), and Ca’ Foscari University in Venice.
She is the author of several publications in English and Italian (https://leidenuni.academia.edu/MarinaCalculli), including two monographs: Come uno Stato, Hizbullah e la mimesi strategica (Vita&Pensiero, Milano) and Terrore Sovrano. Stato e jihad nell’era postliberale (Il Mulino, Bologna – with Francesco Strazzari).
She contributes regularly to Il Manifesto and Huffington Post. She has participated in various TV and radio talk shows, in Italian, English, French and Arabic, on Rai News 24Rai 1Rai 3La 7al-Jazeera, e Radio Canada International.
As a researcher, she has collaborated with various research institutes, including the International Peace Institute (IPI), the Aspen Institute and ISMU Foundation.
Marina Calculli is often invited to discuss issues related to Middle East conflicts, immigration, security and international relations.
