Assante & Castaldo

They are two leading Italian journalists specialised in music reviews; over the past few years they have also been working as TV hosts and theatre performers.

Ernesto Assante and Gino Castaldo are the two music critics at La Repubblica; since 2005 they have also been working in the theatre with Lezioni di rock, while since 2001, on Radio Capital – on Sunday afternoon from 3 to 5 pm – they have been hosting Playlist. More recently they have also become TV personalities, thanks to their programme called WebNotte, which is a stylish talk-show on music as well as the first experiment in social music, broadcast on Tuesday evening on Repubblica.it; also, during the past few seasons, they have been narrating the history of rock during Fabio Fazio’s TV show.

Ernesto Assante writes for La Repubblica and L’Espresso. He has authored several music criticism books. During his thirty-year career he has worked for a number of Italian and foreign weekly and monthly publications, including Epoca, L’Espresso and Rolling Stone. From 2003 to 2009 he taught “New media theory and technique”, then “Musical language analysis”, at the Communication Science faculty of La Sapienza University in Rome.

Gino Castaldo writes about music criticism, music dissemination and radio show hosting. He works for La Repubblica, a newspaper for which he has edited the weekly feature «Musica»; he has hosted shows for Radio3 Rai together with Filippo Bianchi (music critic and populariser, cultural event organizer and professional, then editor of Musica Jazz, the well-established specialised magazine).

Elastica organises their schedule as speakers at both public events and corporate conventions. Moreover it produces two of their formats: Lezioni di rock and Web Notte.

Lezioni di rock

Listening to music, seeing music, telling about music. Ernesto Assante and Gino Castaldo, music critics at the newspaper La Repubblica, have been following music reviews over the past four decades, interviewing protagonists from Italy and abroad, writing about records, concerts and watershed gatherings, anticipating the trends on the domestic and international scene. History and reporting now merge in “Lezioni di Rock” [“Rock lectures”], a guided tour between listening, videos and words, hosted by the two critics who will thus lead the audience on a journey back in time, to rediscover, through selected and commented listening, the development of a musical genre, rock, which has never been just music because it involved dreams and passions, ideas and projects, images and adventures of several generations of young people.
In “Lezioni di Rock” Ernesto Assante and Gino Castaldo will be introducing topics and personalities from the history of rock, reviewing records, telling stories, curiosities, anecdotes and reading texts, guiding the audience through listening of music which is now part of history as well as of everyone’s life. The format has remained unvaried: two-hour lectures, full of memorable songs, and unforgettable stories. What can change are the topics, the “subject matter” personalities: from great protagonists of rock Anglo-Saxon rock music, to Italian music across the decades and through its great protagonists.

Web Notte

It is the smart lounge of live music, the first to be broadcast on the web, every Tuesday night on Repubblica.it. It was the first (highly successful) social music experiment, hosted by Ernesto Assante and Gino Castaldo, already with two highly acclaimed editions. Broadcast from the editorial offices of the newspaper La Repubblica in Rome, it has also already experimented with a live format in the theatre (at the Auditorium Parco della Musica) or for special events, such as Umbria Jazz and “A casa di Lucio”, the programme to commemorate the third anniversary of Lucio Dalla’s passing.

It is an ideal format also for open-air summer events, with only one rule: Webnotte has no rules! Its live version reproduces the formula originally designed for the internet: it is a show with plenty of live music and entertainment, involving many guests and numerous genres, jazz, rock, pop, dance. With the Mark Hanna Band as permanent guest.

Actors, journalists and musicians take the stage for a performance without boundaries, where news and inventions, comedy and songs mix.
